Description

Amano Shrimp, scientifically known as Caridina multidentata, is a highly regarded freshwater shrimp species originating from East Asia, particularly Japan and Taiwan. Renowned for their exceptional algae-eating abilities and intriguing behavior, Amano Shrimp have become a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts, especially in planted and community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Amano Shrimp are relatively small, typically reaching an adult size of about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 centimeters). Their size makes them a suitable addition to a variety of aquarium setups.
  • Body Shape: They have a slender, elongated body with a translucent exoskeleton that allows you to see their internal organs.
  • Coloration: Amano Shrimp exhibit a transparent or translucent body with a series of horizontal bands running across their back, which gives them a striped appearance. They lack the intense coloration of some other shrimp species, allowing their unique markings to stand out.
  • Antennae: Amano Shrimp have long, delicate antennae that they use for sensing their environment and locating food.

Behavior and Temperament: Amano Shrimp are known for their peaceful and non-aggressive nature. They are excellent tankmates for various fish and other aquatic species. These shrimp are highly active and can often be seen foraging for food and exploring their surroundings. They are not known to exhibit aggressive territorial behavior.

Habitat and Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: A 10-gallon (38-liter) tank or larger is suitable for a small group of Amano Shrimp.
  • Substrate: Provide a fine gravel or sand substrate, which mimics their natural environment and allows them to dig and forage comfortably.
  • Filtration: Efficient filtration and good water quality are essential, as Amano Shrimp are sensitive to poor water conditions. They are especially sensitive to ammonia and nitrite levels.
  • Decor: Include hiding spots such as caves, plants, driftwood, and rocks, which offer them shelter and security. Live plants can provide additional grazing areas and enhance the aesthetics of the tank.
  • Water Parameters: Amano Shrimp thrive in freshwater conditions with a temperature range of 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C), a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5, and moderately hard water.

Diet: Amano Shrimp are renowned for their appetite for algae and detritus. They are excellent scavengers and will actively consume various forms of algae, including green and brown types. In addition to algae, supplement their diet with high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and occasional treats like blanched vegetables (e.g., zucchini, spinach) or commercial shrimp foods.
