Description

The Rummynose Tetra, scientifically known as Hemigrammus rhodostomus, is a charming and highly recognizable freshwater fish species prized for its distinctive red markings and schooling behavior. Originating from the Amazon River basin in South America, these tetras have become a sought-after choice for aquarists due to their striking appearance and peaceful nature. Here is a detailed description of the Rummynose Tetra:

Appearance:

  1. Size: Rummynose Tetras are small fish, typically reaching an adult size of about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 centimeters) in length.
  2. Body Shape: They have a streamlined, elongated body with a typical tetra shape, characterized by a forked tail fin and an adipose fin located between the dorsal fin and tail fin.
  3. Coloration: The most distinguishing feature of the Rummynose Tetra is its vibrant red markings. Their entire snout, including the area just above their eyes and their lower jaw, is a deep, fiery red, resembling a "nose." The upper part of their body is silver or pale silver-blue, creating a stark contrast with the red snout. Additionally, their tail fin and dorsal fin may have black markings.

Behavior:

  1. Schooling Nature: Rummynose Tetras are known for their strong schooling behavior. They thrive when kept in groups of at least six or more individuals. In a school, they exhibit tight coordination, with their red noses forming a striking visual display as they swim together.

Habitat:

  1. Origin: Rummynose Tetras originate from the Amazon River basin in South America, particularly in regions of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. They are typically found in slow-moving tributaries and streams with densely vegetated areas.
  2. Aquarium Setup: To recreate their natural habitat, provide an aquarium with plenty of live or artificial plants, driftwood, and hiding spots. They appreciate water conditions with a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0, and very soft to moderately hard water.

Diet:

  1. Omnivorous Feeders: Rummynose Tetras are omnivores and accept a varied diet. They primarily feed on high-quality flakes or pellets but also enjoy live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A diverse diet promotes their overall health and color vibrancy.

Compatibility:

  1. Peaceful Tankmates: Rummynose Tetras are peaceful and can coexist with a wide range of compatible tankmates, including other peaceful community fish and similarly sized species. They do best in a well-planted community aquarium.

Breeding:

  1. Egg Scatterers: Breeding Rummynose Tetras can be challenging in a home aquarium. They are egg scatterers, releasing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or other surfaces. A separate breeding tank with plants for the eggs to attach to is recommended, as adult fish may consume their own eggs if not removed promptly.
