Description

Hygrophila Salicifolia, commonly known as Willow Hygro or Giant Hygrophila, is a striking aquatic plant prized for its elegant, willow-like leaves and vibrant green coloration. This care guide will help you understand how to cultivate and maintain Hygrophila Salicifolia in your aquarium effectively.

Aquarium Requirements:

  1. Tank Size: A tank with a capacity of 20 gallons (75 liters) or larger is recommended to accommodate the size of Hygrophila Salicifolia.

  2. Substrate: Use a nutrient-rich substrate such as aquatic soil or gravel enriched with root tabs to promote healthy growth.

  3. Lighting: Provide moderate to high lighting conditions, ideally with a timer set for 8-10 hours a day. Ensure that the light is evenly distributed to prevent shading.

  4. Water Temperature: Maintain a temperature between 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).

  5. Water Parameters: Aim for a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5 and a water hardness (GH) of 4-8 dGH.

Planting Hygrophila Salicifolia:

  1. Planting Depth: Plant the Hygrophila Salicifolia stems at least 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) deep into the substrate.

  2. Spacing: Space individual stems about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) apart to allow for proper growth and prevent overcrowding.

  3. Trimming: Regularly trim the tops of the stems to encourage bushier growth and prevent them from overshadowing other plants in your aquarium.

Water Care:

  1. Water Changes: Perform weekly water changes of 20-30% to maintain water quality and remove excess nutrients that can contribute to algae growth.

  2. Fertilization: Use a liquid fertilizer or root tabs specifically designed for aquatic plants to provide essential nutrients. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

  3. CO2 Injection: Although not strictly necessary, CO2 injection can promote faster and more robust growth. Monitor your plants' response to determine if CO2 supplementation is needed.

Propagation:

  1. Hygrophila Salicifolia can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply cut healthy stems and plant them in the substrate, where they will root and grow into new plants.
