Description
Alfaro cultratus, commonly known as the Knife Livebearer or Alfaro's Livebearer, is a freshwater fish native to Central America, specifically found in rivers and streams of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This species belongs to the family Poeciliidae, which includes many livebearing fish.
Alfaro cultratus is recognized for its sleek, elongated body shape, resembling the blade of a knife, which gives rise to its common name. Males tend to be more vividly colored than females, often displaying hues of blue, green, and silver, with a distinctive black stripe running along their sides. They typically grow to around 6-8 cm in length. Like other livebearers, they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs, making them interesting for breeding in home aquariums.
They thrive in well-oxygenated waters with moderate flow and prefer environments with plenty of plants and hiding places. Their diet mainly consists of small invertebrates and insects in the wild, though they can adapt to a wide range of foods in captivity. Alfaro cultratus are peaceful fish but may show slight aggression during mating displays. They are best kept in groups and can be housed with other similarly sized peaceful fish in community tanks.
