Description
The Apistogramma agassizii "Fire Red" is a stunning dwarf cichlid known for its vibrant coloration and graceful appearance. Originating from the Amazon Basin, this selectively bred variant boasts striking red hues that intensify along its fins and body, contrasted with shimmering golden and blue tones.
Appearance
- Size: Males grow up to 3 inches (7.5 cm), while females remain smaller at around 2 inches (5 cm).
- Coloration: Males display brilliant fire-red fins and a more elongated, flamboyant body shape. Females are less colorful but exhibit a soft yellow hue, especially during breeding.
- Fins: Males have long, flowing dorsal and caudal fins that add to their elegant appearance.
Behavior
- Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial during breeding. Best suited for community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
- Social Structure: They thrive in pairs or harems (one male with multiple females) in well-planted aquariums.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 10 gallons.
- Water Parameters: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water with a pH of 5.5–7.0 and a temperature of 75–82°F (24–28°C).
- Aquascape: A densely planted tank with driftwood, caves, and leaf litter mimics their natural habitat and provides hiding spots.
