Black Ruby Barbs, scientifically known as Pethia nigrofasciata, are captivating freshwater fish originating from the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, specifically Sri Lanka and India. These barbs are highly sought after by aquarium enthusiasts due to their striking appearance and active nature.

Black Ruby Barbs are medium-sized fish, growing up to about 2.5-3" in length. They have an elongated body with a slightly compressed shape, and their fins are well-developed, displaying beautiful flowing patterns. As their name suggests, they have a deep, dark black coloration that covers their entire body, providing a dramatic contrast to their vibrant red fins. This unique color combination makes them an eye-catching addition to any aquarium.

In terms of temperament, Black Ruby Barbs are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish species. However, it's important to note that they are schooling fish, and it is recommended to keep them in groups of at least six individuals to ensure their well-being. When kept in a group, they display fascinating shoaling behavior, swimming together in synchronized movements.

When creating their habitat, it is advisable to provide them with a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming space. Dense vegetation, rocks, and driftwood can be added to mimic their natural environment and provide hiding places. These barbs are also known to appreciate a sandy or fine-gravel substrate.

Regarding water conditions, Black Ruby Barbs thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. The water temperature should be maintained between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius (75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit). It's important to regularly monitor and maintain water quality, including proper filtration and regular water changes, to ensure the well-being of these fish.

In terms of diet, Black Ruby Barbs are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. They enjoy a staple diet of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Providing a varied diet will help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
