Description

The Flier Cichlid (Archocentrus centrarchus), also known as the Black-Banded Cichlid or simply Flier, is a small, freshwater fish native to Central America, particularly found in lakes, rivers, and slow-moving streams in countries like Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This species is admired for its attractive appearance and manageable size, typically growing to about 4 to 6 inches in length.

The Flier Cichlid has a laterally compressed, oval-shaped body. Its coloration varies from pale yellow to olive green, often accented with vertical black bands running along the sides of its body. A distinct dark spot is often seen on the upper portion of the fish's body near the base of the dorsal fin. The fins are typically transparent or lightly colored, with the dorsal fin often extending towards the tail in a sharp, elongated manner.

Known for its relatively peaceful temperament compared to other cichlids, the Flier Cichlid is a popular choice for community aquariums. However, like many cichlids, it can become territorial during breeding. This species prefers a well-structured tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves or dense vegetation, to mimic its natural habitat. The Flier Cichlid is an omnivore and enjoys a varied diet that includes both plant matter and small invertebrates.
