Description
Ivanacara bimaculata is a captivating species of cichlid native to the freshwater streams and rivers of South America, particularly in Guyana. Known for its striking appearance, this fish features a slender, elongated body with shimmering scales that display a range of colors, including hues of green, blue, and gold. Its most notable feature is the two prominent black spots, one near the gill cover and another on the midsection of its body, giving it the name "bimaculata," which means "two-spotted."
Ivanacara bimaculata is generally peaceful but can display territorial behavior, especially during breeding. It is an egg-laying species that demonstrates strong parental care, with both parents guarding and tending to their eggs and fry. Males are 3"-3.5". Females are around 2-2.5"Females are easily distinguished by a white spot near the anal fin.
This species thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with a temperature range of 76–79°F. It prefers densely planted tanks with ample hiding spots created by driftwood, rocks, and caves.
These fish do well in a community setup as they are relatively peaceful.
