The Red Rainbow Guppy is a stunning and vibrant variant of the popular guppy species, Poecilia reticulata. Known for its eye-catching colors and dynamic presence, this guppy variety brings a lively and colorful touch to any aquarium. Here’s a detailed description of the Red Rainbow Guppy:

Color and Pattern: The Red Rainbow Guppy is renowned for its vivid coloration, featuring a striking blend of red hues with a spectrum of rainbow colors. The body is predominantly a bright, fiery red, often accompanied by iridescent shades of blue, green, yellow, and orange that shimmer in the light. This kaleidoscopic effect gives the guppy a mesmerizing and unique appearance.

Body Shape: Like other guppies, the Red Rainbow Guppy has a streamlined, slender body that is well-adapted for quick and agile swimming. Males are typically more colorful and smaller than the generally larger and less vividly colored females.

Fins: The fins of the Red Rainbow Guppy are particularly noteworthy. The caudal fin (tail fin) is large and fan-shaped, often displaying a continuation of the body’s vibrant red and rainbow coloration. The dorsal fin is elongated and similarly colorful, enhancing the overall elegance and appeal of the fish. The pectoral and anal fins are usually smaller but still contribute to the fish’s striking appearance.

Adult Size: Male Red Rainbow Guppies typically grow to about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length, while females are larger, reaching up to 2.5 inches (6.4 cm).

Habitat and Tank Requirements

Tank Size: Due to their small size, Red Rainbow Guppies can be kept in smaller tanks. A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, but larger tanks are preferred to provide ample swimming space and more stable water conditions.

Water Conditions: These guppies thrive in freshwater with a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C) and a pH range of 6.8-7.8. They are adaptable but require stable, clean water conditions to remain healthy.

Substrate and Decorations: A fine gravel or sand substrate is suitable. Guppies enjoy a well-planted tank with both live and artificial plants, which provide hiding spots and enhance their vibrant colors. Smooth rocks, driftwood, and other decorations can be added to create a visually appealing environment and offer places for exploration and shelter.

Feeding: Red Rainbow Guppies are omnivorous and have a varied diet. High-quality flake or pellet food designed for tropical fish should be the main component of their diet. Supplementing with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, as well as plant-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, ensures balanced nutrition.

Behavior and Compatibility

Temperament: These guppies are known for their peaceful and social nature. They are active swimmers and often exhibit playful behavior, especially when males display their vibrant colors to attract females or establish territory.

Social Needs: Red Rainbow Guppies do best in groups and should be kept in schools of at least six individuals. They can coexist peacefully with other small, non-aggressive fish species, making them ideal for community tanks. However, males can sometimes be a bit nippy or competitive, especially during mating displays.

With proper care, Red Rainbow Guppies typically live for 2-3 years, though some may live longer in optimal conditions.

Ease of Breeding: Guppies are livebearers and are known for their prolific breeding. Females give birth to live, free-swimming fry approximately every 30 days if males are present. Breeding usually occurs easily in home aquariums without special intervention.

Fry Care: Fry can be raised in the main tank if there are plenty of hiding spots, but they are often moved to a separate breeding tank to ensure their survival. They should be fed finely crushed flake food or specialized fry food.
